mayra sérgio

Mayra Sérgio was born in Rio de Janeiro and is currently based in Amsterdam.

Previously, she studied Cinema and worked for 5 years as a Set Designer in Brazil. Through her studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, she was able to combine the sense of narrative acquired by her previous practice with the Dutch approach of material research. Her work investigates identity, memory and immigration through a sensorial scope.

Her work has been featured in Frame Magazine and the New York Times amongst other publications. The artist has received the Stipendium for Emerging Artists by the Mondriaan Fonds in 2018, and her current project "Performing Loss" is also supported by the institution.
